TULSA OILERS AT IOWA BARNSTORMERS

The Oilers, on a four-game win streak, face Iowa on the road.

Tulsa, Okla. — Tulsa Oilers Football, a proud member of the IFL and powered by Community Care, looks for a season-sweep over the Iowa Barnstormers as they face a conference rival on the road this Friday.

LAST TIME OUT… Tulsa took to the road for their biggest task yet on the season, facing the 6-1 Quad City Steamwheelers. After giving up the opening touchdown, Tulsa responded to make the game 7-6 Quad City after a 12-yard scramble into the endzone by TJ Edwards II. Edwards would then connect with "JuJu" Augustine via a passing touchdown to make it 14-13 Steamwheelers to end the first quarter. Augustine picked up his team-leading eighth receiving score of the season. The second quarter featured a one-yard rush past the goal-line by Edwards II to help the Oilers bring the score to 21-19, Quad City. A missed two-point conversion left the score at 21-19 at the end of the half. Tulsa could not score on their opening drive to start the third, however, a forced fumble recovered by Kaytron Allen gave the Oilers the ball back. Jerminic Smith found his first touchdown as an Oiler on a 7-yard turnaround route along the goal line to make it 26-21, Tulsa. Quad City responded but Rio Ramirez hit his first field goal of the night to give the Oilers a 29-28 advantage to end the third frame. Tulsa stopped Quad City from the one-yard line twice to force a turnover on downs, and would push a 49-yard touchdown drive to its completion via a Cole Blackman touchdown catch to give the Oilers a 36-28 lead. The final minute saw Quad City get in the endzone, but an open-field tackle by Taylor Hawkins on the two-point conversion stopped the Steamwheelers in their tracks to keep the game 36-34 Oilers. A deuce attempt by Kyle Kaplan went wide left, and Tulsa captured a 36-24 win on the road in Moline, Illinois, over the number one seed in the Eastern Conference.

FOCUS AHEAD…  A franchise-high four-game winning streak leads Tulsa into Des Moines, Iowa with confidence, knowing they are coming off a victory over the top-seeded Steamwheelers. Despite some inconsistencies in the fourth quarter against Iowa the first time these two teams met, the Oilers made a strong stand last week versus Quad City in the final frame and proved that they are capable of learning and adapting. Iowa is a solid offensive team when they can avoid turnovers and should not be taken lightly, this Oilers defense put on a show in  Illinois and wants to make sure it wasn't a thing of the past. Some new additions include the defensive lineman Rashaun Williams who most recently played for Green Bay. Also joining Tulsa is kicker, Jonah Edwards who will make his debut this week, Jake Balderrama returns for the first time this season and Isaiah Smith will make his season debut at DB.

HOW TO KEEP "CLIP THE WINGS" OF IOWA… The Barnstormers had a tremendous fourth quarter against the Oilers last matchup and they caught fire too late in a 62-57 win for Tulsa. Managing the surges of Iowa will be important in matchup number two. TJ Edwards II had some turnovers that were uncharacteristic and if those mistakes are cleaned up, Iowa could be in real trouble. New addition as of last week, WR Jerminic Smith is now warmed up and should exponentially add value as the weeks move along. Taylor Hawkins has been tremendous this season and will be a force versus this turnover-prone Iowa offense, keeping an eye on his game will certainly allow one to understand the storyline well as it plays out. The Barnstormers ran into a high-flying Green Bay team last week and the pressure is on their defense to have a better week after last.

Tulsa travels to face the Iowa Barnstormers in Des Moines, Iowa, on Friday, May 23, kickoff is set for 7:05 p.m. CT.
